Frequently Asked Questions

As fundraisers are reviewed and verified, our team regularly updates the hub. Fundraisers are displayed in random order to provide equal visibility to those in need.

Our top priority is ensuring that our platform is a safe and trusted place to give and receive help. To protect against misuse, we have a world-class Trust & Safety team, innovative technology, partnerships with payment industry leaders, and the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee. You can learn more about our Trust & Safety practices on our safety hub.

Our Trust & Safety team works to verify fundraisers, so people can have confidence that donations reach the intended recipient. For our team to verify a fundraiser, it must be clear a) who the organizer is, b) the person, business, or charity they’re raising funds for, c) the organizer’s relationship to the recipient of the funds, and d) how the funds will be used.

GoFundMe’s dedicated Trust & Safety team reviews fundraisers to ensure funds are directed to those in need. Donations are processed by payment partners, held, and then released only to the person named as the recipient of funds (the beneficiary). Before funds are transferred to the beneficiary, their personal information must be verified. If any questions arise in the review, our processors hold the funds until the recipient is verified.

Yes, you can create a fundraiser on behalf of an individual, family, or organization. If you create a fundraiser for a nonprofit, donations will be tax-deductible, and funds will be transferred directly to the nonprofit.

Most funds are available within a few business days, ensuring beneficiaries quick access to support when it matters most.

Funds are still delivered to the beneficiary, even if the fundraiser doesn’t meet its target amount.

There is no fee to start or manage a fundraiser. The only fee on GoFundMe is a standard transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation, which allows us to pay the payment processors and safely deliver funds.  GoFundMe is primarily powered by voluntary tips and relies on these optional contributions from donors to maintain our quality customer service, trust and safety protections, and world-class fundraising technology.

According to FEMA’s website, “By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits you receive from another source. However, there are many different types of assistance available through FEMA and we review each application to ensure you receive the aid for which you are eligible.

If you receive money from a GoFundMe page for a specific disaster related expense–such as home repairs, funeral expenses or other emergency needs—you may not be able to receive FEMA aid for the same expense. For example, if you receive donations to clean up storm damage to your home, FEMA may not be able to also grant you financial assistance for home clean up. We encourage all survivors to apply for assistance regardless so we can review your specific case.”

You can report a fundraiser at any time and our team will review it promptly. GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and cooperates with law enforcement investigations of those accused of wrongdoing.
